Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script
Which story is worth the gamble has already been decided by somebody before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set. A book often appears at the start of the pipeline when you track a few hits backward. Jami Davenport’s novel Shutout is the basis of ReelShort’s Breaking reelshort free mini series the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort premiered Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. Korea’s 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. With several app owners also running reading businesses, source material sits close at hand: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Where no book exists, writers rely on well-worn tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Squeezing a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds is the script’s task.
Stage Two: Familiar Faces in the Cast
On screen, the format’s economics come into view in casting. Browsing the cast lists for short series on IMDb, you see the same names turning up again and again. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was headlined by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, both on GoodShort in 2025, were led by Rosa Singerman, who played opposite Franky Cammarata in the latter. Leads with a following on one app arrive at the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles. Studios are also casting with a certain viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days
TheWrap places the typical cost of a Western short drama at $150,000 to $300,000 per series, with the shoot taking eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format tells a similar story: it places a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. If a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic works out to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Jiuzhou Culture, one of the Chinese producers selling abroad, has reported leaner numbers still, putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Per finished episode, that equals roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also stated that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. Dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, so the costly shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Slicing to 60–100 Seconds
Composed vertically at 9:16 for a phone, the footage is cut into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room. An episode of that length has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is built around a question that the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that carries you from one episode to the next. Taken together, the slivers of a 70-episode series come to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, allowing the same footage reach viewers who never open the app. Editors, in other words, are editing video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Stage Five: Placing the Paywall
Finally comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. According to TheWrap, the standard model makes the first eight to ten episodes free. In 2024 TheWrap counted the first eight episodes as free, whereas ReelShort’s own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes. Coins unlock the episodes that follow, and according to ReelShort’s blog the standard cost of an episode is about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews on its own, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. What your store shows may be different, since prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, alongside auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the contentious part. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps offering a way around the wall are unofficial and best avoided.
Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation
With the latest production stage, there is no camera at all. ReelShort’s live-action library is now accompanied by animated motion comics. Arthur Lancaster, the hero of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually exposes the foster sister who repeatedly framed him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. This title should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares its name. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reports that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line
Traditional studios have taken note, and the clearest example is Fox Entertainment. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, accepted an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside, and Fox has also committed to making more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital; My Drama, meanwhile, took home the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. That a network-scale producer is committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.
A Quick Look at the Production Line
Setting the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. The expensive, fixed block is the shoot, and much of the rest is organized around it. Pre-tested scripts tend to arrive as novels or familiar tropes, known faces carry the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall drive the edit. While fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. Using only publicly reported figures, the table below lays out typical time and cost at each stage. If no reliable number has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Stage of production | Usual time / cost | What goes on |
|---|---|---|
| Script and source material | No public number | A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel |
| The casting stage | No public number | Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage |
| Shoot | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame |
| Editing | Episodes of 60–100 seconds | Footage is split into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and the paywall | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort | Episodes are unlocked with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| Animation and AI | Costs not disclosed | Motion comics including The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI |
| Studio co-productions | 200+ titles across two years (Fox for My Drama) | Vertical series for an app are produced by an established studio |
